Meta Launches ‘Muse Spark’ AI Model to Regain Ground in Fierce Tech Race
Meta has unveiled its latest artificial intelligence model, Muse Spark, marking a major step in its efforts to compete with industry leaders such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google.
The model is the first major release from Meta’s newly formed AI division, Meta Superintelligence Labs, led by Alexandr Wang, who joined the company following a $14.3 billion investment in Scale AI.
Muse Spark, internally codenamed “Avocado,” is designed to be smaller and faster than previous models while still capable of handling complex reasoning tasks in fields such as science, mathematics, and health. Meta says the model reflects a complete rebuild of its AI infrastructure over the past nine months.
Despite heavy investment in artificial intelligence, Meta has struggled to match the success of competitors. Its earlier open-source models failed to gain strong traction among developers, prompting CEO Mark Zuckerberg to shift strategy toward more efficient and commercially viable systems.
Unlike Meta’s previous Llama models, Muse Spark will initially remain proprietary, though the company has indicated that future versions may be open-sourced. The model will also be monetized through API access, with select partners already testing its capabilities.
Muse Spark is expected to power Meta’s ecosystem, including its AI assistant across Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, and its standalone Meta AI app. It will also integrate into hardware products like Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses and upcoming features such as AI-powered shopping and video tools.
The model introduces multiple user modes, including quick-response options, advanced reasoning for complex queries, and a “Contemplating mode” that uses multiple AI agents to process tasks in parallel—aiming to rival advanced systems like Google’s Gemini and OpenAI’s high-end models.
The launch comes at a time when the global generative AI market is projected to grow rapidly, from $22 billion in 2025 to nearly $325 billion by 2033. Meta is significantly increasing its investment, with AI-related capital expenditures expected to reach up to $135 billion in 2026.
Following the announcement, Meta’s stock surged nearly 9%, reflecting investor optimism about the company’s renewed push into the AI space.
As competition intensifies, Muse Spark represents Meta’s attempt to reclaim momentum in one of the most important and lucrative technology races of the decade.
