Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to promoting lasting peace in the Middle East during a meeting with Iran’s Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni in Islamabad.
According to a statement issued by the Interior Ministry on Wednesday, the two ministers held detailed discussions on Pakistan-Iran bilateral relations, regional security and recent diplomatic developments following the United States-Iran peace initiative.
Talks Focus on Regional Stability
The meeting took place during the visit of an Iranian delegation led by President Masoud Pezeshkian, who arrived in Pakistan after the signing of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the United States and Iran and the subsequent high-level negotiations held in Bürgenstock, Switzerland.
During the meeting, both ministers welcomed the easing of regional tensions and expressed satisfaction over the progress made through diplomatic engagement.
Pakistan Reaffirms Commitment to Peace
Mohsin Naqvi congratulated his Iranian counterpart on the successful outcome of the US-Iran negotiations and praised Tehran’s role in achieving the breakthrough.
“This agreement would not have been possible without your and the Iranian government’s sincere efforts,” Naqvi said.
He added that Pakistan has consistently supported peace and stability around the world.
“Pakistan has always desired peace and stability across the world. Pakistan will continue its efforts for lasting peace in the Middle East.”
Naqvi expressed hope that the agreement would produce positive and lasting results for the entire region.
Expanded Bilateral Cooperation
The two sides also agreed to strengthen cooperation between Pakistan and Iran in several important areas, including:
- Counterterrorism
- Security cooperation
- Cybersecurity
- Immigration and border management
Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni announced plans to make a more detailed official visit to Pakistan in the near future to further expand cooperation between the interior ministries of both countries.
He also thanked Pakistan for its hospitality and appreciated Islamabad’s constructive diplomatic role in facilitating dialogue between Washington and Tehran.
Leadership Calls for Regional Unity
During President Pezeshkian’s visit on Tuesday, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stated that Pakistan and Iran would stand together “like an iron wall” against any attempts to undermine regional peace, warning that there were forces opposed to the diplomatic progress achieved through the Islamabad MoU.
The Iranian president also called for greater unity among Muslim countries and advocated building a new regional security framework based on cooperation and dialogue.
During his visit, President Pezeshkian held separate meetings with President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir.
