Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has clarified that Iran’s ballistic missile programme is not part of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between Tehran and Washington to end the recent Middle East conflict.
Speaking during delegation-level talks alongside Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in Islamabad, the prime minister dismissed claims that the agreement addressed Iran’s missile capabilities, stating that the issue was never discussed during negotiations.
No Mention of Ballistic Missiles
PM Shehbaz said there should be no misunderstanding or misinformation regarding the contents of the Islamabad MoU.
He stressed that, as the mediator in the peace process, he could state unequivocally that the agreement contains no reference to Iran’s ballistic missile programme.
The premier also argued against what he described as double standards, saying it was unfair for some countries to possess ballistic missiles while questioning Iran’s right to maintain similar defensive capabilities.
Warning Against “Spoilers”
The prime minister warned that attempts by “spoilers” to misrepresent the agreement could undermine the fragile peace process.
He urged observers to judge the memorandum based on its actual provisions rather than speculation, reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to promoting dialogue and regional stability.
Pakistan to Continue Mediation
PM Shehbaz reiterated that Pakistan would continue facilitating dialogue between the United States and Iran until a lasting and honourable peace agreement is achieved.
He said Pakistan remained committed to preventing a wider regional conflict that could have devastating consequences for the Middle East and the global economy.
The premier also praised the resilience of the Iranian leadership and people during the conflict.
Appreciation for Pakistan’s Peace Efforts
The prime minister commended Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir for his role in supporting ceasefire efforts and facilitating the Islamabad MoU.
He also acknowledged the contributions of friendly countries, including:
- Qatar
- Saudi Arabia
- Türkiye
- Egypt
for supporting the diplomatic process.
Iranian President Reaffirms Position
Addressing a joint press conference, President Masoud Pezeshkian also confirmed that Iran’s missile programme was not included in the agreement and “will never be.”
He reiterated that Iran would not negotiate its defence capabilities with any country, adding that lasting regional peace could only be achieved through dialogue, cooperation and mutual respect.
Strong Pakistan-Iran Relations
President Pezeshkian described Pakistan as a brotherly nation, highlighting the deep historical, cultural and religious ties between the two countries.
He thanked Pakistan for its diplomatic support and praised Islamabad’s role in facilitating negotiations between Tehran and Washington.
The Iranian president said he held productive meetings with:
- President Asif Ali Zardari
- Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif
- Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir
to discuss bilateral relations and regional developments.
Visit Concludes
President Pezeshkian concluded his official visit to Pakistan later the same day and departed for Tehran.
He was seen off at Islamabad by Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir and Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar following the completion of his engagements.
