Xi Jinping Calls for ‘Indomitable Fighting Spirit,’ Defends Tiananmen Crackdown
Chinese President Xi Jinping has urged China to demonstrate an “indomitable fighting spirit” while confronting major challenges, as he delivered a high-profile speech that also praised the Communist Party’s response to the 1989 Tiananmen Square democracy protests.
Xi made the remarks during a ceremony at Beijing’s Great Hall of the People marking the centenary of the birth of former Chinese leader Jiang Zemin, who led China from 1993 to 2002 and died in 2022.
Thousands of officials and delegates attended the event, while all seven members of the Communist Party’s powerful Politburo Standing Committee, along with retired senior party and state officials, were present, according to state television footage.
Call to Confront Major Challenges
Xi portrayed China as a country facing significant challenges but capable of overcoming them through determination and political unity.
He called for an “indomitable fighting spirit” and urged the country to confront major challenges, regardless of whether they take the form of difficult circumstances or severe crises.
The Chinese leader also stressed the need to protect China’s national sovereignty, security and development interests.
His remarks come as Beijing faces a range of domestic and international pressures, including economic challenges, geopolitical tensions and growing strategic competition with the United States and other Western countries.
Reference to Tiananmen Crackdown
One of the most significant elements of Xi’s speech was his reference to the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests, one of the most sensitive subjects in modern Chinese political history.
The demonstrations began in April 1989 following the death of former Communist Party leader Hu Yaobang, who had been associated with political reform and greater liberalisation.
Thousands of students and other protesters subsequently gathered in Beijing, demanding political reforms and greater democracy.
The protests continued for several weeks before Chinese authorities ordered the military to clear Tiananmen Square on June 4. Troops opened fire as the authorities moved to suppress the demonstrations.
The exact number of people killed remains disputed, while discussion of the crackdown remains heavily restricted in mainland China.
Praise for Jiang Zemin
Xi highlighted Jiang Zemin’s role during the political upheaval of 1989, praising his support for the Communist Party leadership’s decisions and his efforts to maintain stability in Shanghai.
Jiang later became China’s paramount leader following the Tiananmen crisis and oversaw a period of rapid economic expansion and China’s deeper integration into the global economy.
Xi also praised a broader range of Jiang’s political and economic achievements, presenting his predecessor as an important figure in China’s modern development.
Emphasis on Stability and Sovereignty
Xi’s comments underline the continued importance Beijing places on political stability and national sovereignty.
By invoking the events surrounding Tiananmen while praising the Communist Party’s response, Xi reinforced the official Chinese narrative that political stability is essential to the country’s development.
He also linked national strength with China’s ability to withstand difficult circumstances and defend its interests.
The speech therefore combined historical reflection with a broader message about China’s future direction, emphasizing resilience, stability and the protection of national interests.
China’s Political Direction
Xi’s remarks are likely to reinforce the perception that Beijing has little intention of revisiting its official interpretation of the 1989 protests.
Instead, the leadership continues to portray the Communist Party’s handling of the crisis as part of its broader responsibility for maintaining political order and national stability.
The emphasis on an “indomitable fighting spirit” also reflects Xi’s wider political messaging, in which China is encouraged to withstand external pressure while pursuing economic development and strengthening its national power.
