Russia is preparing what its Defense Ministry described as “massive strikes” against Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, raising fears of another difficult winter for the country.
The warning comes days after a devastating Russian strike on a warehouse near Kyiv killed at least 38 people, according to Ukrainian officials, making it the deadliest Russian attack in Ukraine so far this year.
Moscow says the planned strikes are a response to continued Ukrainian attacks on Russian energy facilities and infrastructure. Ukraine, meanwhile, has been using long-range drones to target Russian oil refineries, logistics hubs and other strategic sites in an effort to increase pressure on Moscow.
With winter approaching, Ukrainian officials and security experts are warning that Russia could once again target Ukraine’s power grid and critical infrastructure during freezing temperatures. Ukraine is also facing an acute shortage of air defense systems.
