Bushra Bibi Returns to Adiala Jail After Successful Eye Surgery in Rawalpindi

Former First Lady Bushra Bibi has been shifted back to Adiala Jail after undergoing a successful eye surgery at a private hospital in Rawalpindi, jail authorities confirmed on Friday.

According to an official statement, Bushra Bibi had been experiencing impaired vision in her right eye. Following a medical evaluation by ophthalmologists, she was diagnosed with retinal detachment — a serious condition requiring immediate surgical intervention.

Prison authorities promptly transferred her to a private medical facility on Thursday evening, where pre-operative assessments were conducted. The surgery was carried out by Professor Dr. Nadeem Qureshi along with a team of specialists. After spending one night under medical observation, she was discharged and returned to Adiala Jail.

Officials stated that post-operative care and follow-up examinations would continue as per the recommendations of her doctors.

Bushra Bibi is currently serving multiple sentences, including a seven-year term in the £190 million corruption case and a 17-year sentence in the Toshakhana case. Her health condition has recently drawn concern from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leadership.

PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan emphasized that access to medical care and family visits are fundamental rights. He urged authorities to allow family members to meet Bushra Bibi and called for proper medical facilities for both her and former prime minister Imran Khan, who is also incarcerated.

Earlier reports had indicated that Bushra Bibi was suffering from additional eye-related complications, including posterior vitreous detachment (PVD), myopia, and astigmatism. However, these claims have not been independently verified.

Her recent surgery and health concerns have once again brought attention to the conditions of high-profile detainees in Pakistan, with calls for adherence to legal and humanitarian standards regarding prisoner welfare.
