US Lawmakers Urge 25th Amendment Action Over Trump’s Iran Threats

Washington, D.C.: A growing number of US lawmakers have called for invoking the 25th Amendment against President Donald Trump following his escalating threats against Iran, including a warning that “a whole civilisation will die tonight.”

The controversial remarks, posted on Trump’s social media platform Truth Social, triggered sharp criticism from Democratic lawmakers, who described the rhetoric as dangerous and potentially unlawful.

Representative Melanie Stansbury argued that the president was “threatening mass killings and war crimes,” saying such actions justify the use of constitutional mechanisms like the 25th Amendment or impeachment.

Similarly, Johnny Olszewski urged the Cabinet to act immediately if there is any indication Trump intends to carry out his threats. Congressman Robert Garcia claimed the president had “lost his mind” and called on officials to remain “loyal to the Constitution.”

Lawmakers including Sydney Kamlager-Dove, Ro Khanna, and Mark Pocan also condemned the statements, warning that such threats could violate international law, including the Geneva Conventions.

Representative Sara Jacobs described the remarks as a “threat of genocide,” while Sarah McBride called them “horrifying, illegal, and genocidal.” Illinois Governor JB Pritzker echoed the alarm, describing the situation as deeply concerning.

What is the 25th Amendment?

The 25th Amendment to the US Constitution allows the vice president and a majority of the Cabinet to declare a president “unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office.” In such a scenario, authority is immediately transferred to the vice president.

However, any immediate action appears complicated as Vice President JD Vance is currently abroad in Hungary, potentially delaying coordination among senior officials.

Rising Global Tensions

The political backlash comes amid escalating conflict in the Middle East following US and Israeli strikes on Iran since late February. Tehran has responded with drone and missile attacks targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf states hosting US military assets.

The confrontation has already disrupted global markets, aviation, and energy supplies, intensifying fears of a broader regional war.

Uncertain Path Ahead

While calls to invoke the 25th Amendment are growing louder, such a move would require unprecedented coordination within the executive branch. Meanwhile, critics warn that continued escalation in rhetoric and military action could push the crisis into an even more dangerous phase.
