New Investigation Suggests Adam Back Could Be Bitcoin Creator Satoshi Nakamoto
A fresh investigation has reignited one of the biggest mysteries in technology and finance — the true identity of Bitcoin’s creator, Satoshi Nakamoto.
A report by The New York Times claims that Adam Back, CEO of Blockstream, is the strongest candidate behind the pseudonym. Back, a prominent cryptographer and early figure in the Bitcoin community, has repeatedly denied the claims, including in recent statements posted on X.
The investigation, led by journalist John Carreyrou, draws on circumstantial evidence such as similarities in writing style, overlapping timelines of online activity, and Back’s early work on Hashcash — a proof-of-work system that became foundational to Bitcoin’s mining process.
Despite the claims, Back dismissed the report, stating, “Ultimately, it doesn’t prove anything… it’s really not me.” Blockstream also rejected the conclusions, emphasizing that the investigation lacks definitive cryptographic proof.
The identity of Satoshi Nakamoto has long been a subject of speculation, with several candidates proposed over the years, including computer scientists Hal Finney and Nick Szabo. More recently, the 2024 documentary Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery suggested developer Peter Todd as a possible creator.
However, many in the crypto community argue that Nakamoto’s identity is largely irrelevant to Bitcoin’s long-term value. The network has operated independently for over a decade, and its decentralized nature means no single individual controls it.
What remains significant, analysts note, is the untouched stash of early Bitcoin believed to belong to Nakamoto, which could impact markets if ever moved.
Following the report, Bitcoin’s price rose over 4%, reflecting broader market optimism tied to geopolitical developments rather than the identity speculation itself.
While the mystery persists, the latest investigation adds another layer to the enduring debate over who truly created the world’s first cryptocurrency.
