Bahamas — Authorities in the Bahamas have arrested the husband of a missing American woman as investigations intensify into her disappearance during a boating trip near the Abaco Islands.
According to the Royal Bahamas Police Force, 55-year-old Lynette Hooker, a resident of Michigan, was reported missing after allegedly falling overboard from a small dinghy on Saturday evening.
She and her husband, 58-year-old Brian Hooker, had departed Hope Town around 7:30 p.m., heading toward Elbow Cay where their yacht, “Soulmate,” was anchored.

Incident at Sea
Brian Hooker told authorities that deteriorating weather conditions — including strong winds and rough seas — caused his wife to fall into the water. He said powerful currents quickly carried her away, making rescue efforts difficult.
Police noted that Lynette was holding the boat’s key at the time, which caused the dinghy’s engine to shut off when she fell overboard, leaving Brian stranded in challenging conditions.
After hours at sea, he reportedly paddled back to shore, arriving at a marina around 4 a.m. Sunday, where he alerted authorities.

Arrest and Investigation
Brian Hooker was taken into custody on Wednesday evening and is being questioned in connection with the disappearance. Officials have not yet filed formal charges, and no specific allegations have been publicly disclosed.
His attorney, Terrel Butler, stated that his client is fully cooperating with investigators and has “categorically denied” any wrongdoing. He also described Hooker as “heartbroken” and said the arrest has been a traumatic experience.
According to Butler, Hooker is awaiting a formal police interview and may be held for up to 48 hours while authorities determine their next steps. He also revealed that his client sustained minor injuries while assisting police during a search of the couple’s yacht.
Search Efforts Continue
A large-scale search operation remains underway, involving multiple agencies by land, sea, and air. The United States Coast Guard is reportedly leading the investigation alongside Bahamian authorities.
Officials confirmed that the search for Lynette Hooker is ongoing, as concerns grow over the challenging sea conditions in the area.

Family Seeks Answers
Lynette Hooker’s daughter, Karli Aylesworth, has called for a “full and complete investigation” into the incident. She described her mother as physically fit and a capable swimmer, raising questions about the circumstances surrounding her disappearance.
The couple, known for documenting their sailing adventures online under the name “The Sailing Hookers,” were experienced seafarers.
Ongoing Probe
Authorities have confirmed that a criminal investigation is underway to determine whether any foul play was involved. Meanwhile, the United States Department of State said it is aware of the case and is working with Bahamian officials to provide assistance.
As search and investigative efforts continue, the case has drawn growing public attention, with many awaiting answers about what happened in the waters off Elbow Cay.
