A devastating mass shooting in the U.S. state of Louisiana has left eight children dead after a father allegedly carried out a deadly rampage in the city of Shreveport, in what authorities have described as a domestic violence incident of unprecedented scale.
The suspect, identified as Shamar Elkins, is accused of killing seven of his own children along with another unrelated child early Sunday morning. The victims ranged in age from just one year old to 14, making the tragedy one of the deadliest incidents involving children in recent U.S. history.
According to the Shreveport Police Department, the shooting began around 5:00 a.m. local time. Authorities say the suspect initially shot a woman in the street before proceeding to a nearby residence, where the majority of the victims were found. In total, 10 people were shot during the attack.
Two adult women, including the children’s mother, remain in critical condition as they receive medical treatment. In a desperate attempt to survive, one child reportedly managed to flee and alert authorities, while another jumped from a roof and was later hospitalized.
Following the shooting, the suspect fled the scene in a stolen vehicle, prompting a police chase that extended into neighboring areas. Law enforcement officers ultimately confronted and shot the suspect, who died at the scene.
Local officials have described the incident as one of the most tragic in the city’s history. Shreveport Mayor Tom Arceneaux called it “maybe the worst tragic situation we’ve ever had,” emphasizing the deep emotional toll on families, first responders, and the wider community.
Police Chief Wayne Smith expressed shock at the scale of the violence, stating that authorities are working closely with Louisiana State Police and other agencies to fully investigate the circumstances behind the attack.
