Antonelli Dominates Qualifying Again as Mercedes Locks Front Row in Japan
Italian rising star Kimi Antonelli delivered another standout performance by securing his second consecutive pole position during qualifying for the Japanese Grand Prix.
The 19-year-old Mercedes driver clocked an impressive lap time of 1:28.778 at the iconic Suzuka Circuit, outpacing teammate George Russell by 0.298 seconds. The result marked a third consecutive front-row lockout for Mercedes this season.
Oscar Piastri secured third place for McLaren, finishing 0.354 seconds behind Antonelli.
Speaking after the session, Antonelli expressed confidence in his performance, noting consistent improvement throughout qualifying. “I felt very good in the car and every run I was just improving,” he said, adding that the team would now shift focus to race day.
Despite a minor lock-up on his final attempt, the young Italian maintained his dominance, underlining his rapid development in Formula One.
Championship Battle Intensifies
Antonelli enters Sunday’s race with strong momentum following his recent success in China. A victory in Japan could see him overtake teammate George Russell in the championship standings, where the Brit currently holds a narrow four-point lead.
Russell, who claimed victory in the season opener in Australia and the sprint race in China, struggled with rear grip during qualifying and was unable to challenge Antonelli’s pace.
With momentum on his side, Antonelli now stands on the brink of taking the championship lead, signaling a potential shift in the Formula One title race.
