Myanmar Junta Chief Min Aung Hlaing Nominated as President Amid Controversy

Myanmar Military Chief Min Aung Hlaing Set to Assume Presidency

Min Aung Hlaing, who led Myanmar’s 2021 military coup, has been nominated for the country’s presidency after a general election that excluded major opposition parties.

The nomination, alongside two military loyalists with little chance of winning, virtually guarantees his ascension to the presidency. Western nations have sanctioned Min Aung Hlaing for his role in the coup and the violent crackdown that followed.

Since the 2021 takeover, Myanmar has experienced a civil war that has killed thousands and displaced millions, with large areas of the country still under the control of armed opposition groups.

The junta described the December-January elections as a step toward peace. However, the vote was widely condemned as a sham, with many popular parties banned from running and many regions prevented from voting due to ongoing conflict.

Despite these criticisms, approximately 90% of the new parliament is loyal to Min Aung Hlaing—either through military appointments, reserved parliamentary seats for the armed forces, or election under the military-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party.

Constitutionally, if Min Aung Hlaing becomes president, he must relinquish command of the armed forces—a move that carries risks due to dissent among senior commanders. To mitigate this, he has appointed staunch loyalist Ye Win Oo as the new military chief, ensuring continued influence over military operations.

Additionally, Min Aung Hlaing will head a newly created consultative council, which may allow him to maintain authority over both civilian and military affairs. Analysts say the administration will essentially be an expansion of the current military junta under civilian guise.

There has been no indication that the new leadership will change its approach to suppressing opposition or addressing the ongoing civil conflict.
