FBI Says Michigan Synagogue Attack Was Hezbollah-Inspired Terror Plot
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has described a violent attack on a Michigan synagogue as a “Hezbollah-inspired act of terrorism” deliberately targeting the Jewish community.
Authorities identified the suspect as Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, who carried out the March 12 attack at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield.
According to officials, Ghazali drove a truck into the synagogue before opening fire and igniting a blaze using gasoline. He later died at the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot wound during an exchange with security personnel.
Investigators say the suspect intended to cause mass casualties. However, no worshippers were harmed, including approximately 140 children inside the building’s preschool at the time. A security guard struck by the vehicle is expected to recover.
Officials revealed that Ghazali had conducted extensive planning in the days leading up to the attack. He searched online for Jewish gatherings, attempted to purchase firearms, and ultimately acquired an AR-style rifle along with ammunition.
The suspect also reportedly practiced at a shooting range and purchased large quantities of fireworks, which were used in the attack.
FBI officials said Ghazali was “motivated and inspired” by the ideology of Hezbollah, although they could not confirm direct membership in the group.
Authorities noted that the suspect’s actions appeared to follow patterns seen in “lone wolf” terrorism, where individuals act independently but are influenced by extremist propaganda.

In the hours before the attack, Ghazali reportedly shared messages and videos indicating his intent to carry out violence, along with references to geopolitical events and personal grievances.
The attack also led to a fire at the synagogue, while dozens of responding officers were treated for smoke inhalation. Emergency services quickly contained the situation and prevented further casualties.
Law enforcement officials stressed that the incident highlights ongoing concerns about ideologically motivated violence and the risks posed by self-radicalized individuals.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities continue to examine the suspect’s motives, communications, and possible external influences.
