Harvey Weinstein Rape Case Ends in Another Mistrial as New York Jury Fails to Reach Verdict

Harvey Weinstein Rape Case Ends in Another Mistrial as Jury Deadlocks in New York

A New York judge has declared a mistrial in the rape case against former Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein after jurors failed to reach a unanimous verdict following days of deliberation.

The month-long trial focused on allegations that Weinstein raped aspiring actress Jessica Mann in a Manhattan hotel room in 2013. Jurors informed the court they were hopelessly deadlocked, prompting Judge Curtis Farber to officially end the proceedings on Friday.

This marks the third time a New York jury has considered the rape allegations against Weinstein. His original 2020 conviction was overturned in 2024 after an appeals court ruled he did not receive a fair trial because testimony from additional accusers was improperly admitted.

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg said prosecutors are reviewing whether to retry the case once again.

“While we are disappointed that the proceedings ended with a mistrial, we deeply respect the jury system and sincerely thank all of the jurors for their time and dedication,” Bragg said in a statement.

He also thanked Jessica Mann for coming forward with her allegations and said prosecutors would consult with her before deciding their next legal steps.

Weinstein’s legal team argued that public opinion and years of intense media coverage have made it nearly impossible for him to receive a fair trial.

“The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office should stop retrying the same case and focus its resources on violent crime and public safety issues affecting New Yorkers,” Weinstein’s lawyers said.

During the trial, Mann testified that while some encounters with Weinstein were consensual, he sexually assaulted her in a hotel room despite her repeated refusals. Weinstein’s defense team maintained the encounter was consensual.

Weinstein has faced accusations of sexual misconduct, assault, and rape from more than 100 women since 2017. While several allegations did not result in criminal charges, his convictions in California mean he is expected to remain in prison for the rest of his life.

The allegations against Weinstein helped ignite the global #MeToo movement, encouraging women worldwide to speak out against sexual abuse and misconduct by powerful figures.

Before his downfall, Weinstein was one of Hollywood’s most influential producers and co-founder of Miramax, the studio behind award-winning films including Pulp Fiction and Shakespeare in Love.

He has also faced multiple civil lawsuits and agreed to a $19 million settlement in 2020 involving allegations of sexual harassment and rape.
