“I don’t expect forgiveness,” note from suspected gunman under investigation

Authorities in the United States are reviewing a written message allegedly sent by Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old California teacher, following a shooting incident at the Washington hotel hosting the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday night.

In the note, investigators say Allen apologized to family members and others whose trust he had “abused,” while also stating, “I don’t expect forgiveness.” Officials believe the message was sent shortly before the attempted attack and may provide key insight into his motives.

Law enforcement sources say Allen expressed political anger in the writings and indicated he intended to target members of the U.S. administration. Authorities are currently analysing the note alongside his social media activity to determine what led to the alleged attack.

According to officials, Allen travelled from California to Washington, D.C. via train, after purchasing firearms legally in prior years. He was later detained inside the hotel after allegedly attempting to breach security during the event.

Investigators also say the suspect’s family alerted authorities after receiving the message, which included references to grievances and strong political views. The note reportedly contained expressions of rage toward government actions and broader political conditions.

Officials confirmed that Allen has not been cooperating with investigators, and efforts are ongoing to establish a clear motive. Early findings suggest he may have been targeting administration officials specifically, though authorities have not ruled out additional factors.

Public records show Allen worked part-time as a teacher and was also involved in video game development. He studied mechanical engineering in California and later worked in education and software projects. He had also been named “teacher of the month” by a tutoring organisation in 2024.

Law enforcement agencies, including federal and local authorities, are continuing to examine his background, communications, and movements leading up to the incident. The investigation remains active.
