Israel Expands Airstrikes Across Lebanon Amid Escalating Conflict

BEIRUT: Israel has intensified its military attacks across Lebanon, striking not only areas controlled by Hezbollah but also locations outside its influence, raising fears of a broader and more dangerous conflict.

Airstrikes this week targeted multiple مناطق, including residential areas in and around the capital, Beirut. A vehicle was hit in the Mansourieh area, a mainly Christian neighborhood north of the city, while another strike hit the Jnah district in central Beirut without prior warning.

Heavy strikes also continued in southern Beirut suburbs such as Dahieh, known as a Hezbollah stronghold, as well as in southern Lebanon.

  • A building near Beirut airport was destroyed after an evacuation warning
  • A health facility in the south was hit, killing a paramedic
  • At least 7 people were killed in southern Lebanon in one day
  • Total health workers killed has reached 53

The Israeli military said it targeted Hezbollah infrastructure and killed senior figures linked to the group.

⚔️ How the Conflict Escalated

The conflict intensified after Hezbollah launched missiles at Israel on 2 March, following earlier US and Israeli strikes on Iran, Hezbollah’s main ally.

Since then, Israel has continued heavy bombardment while also advancing troops into southern Lebanon.

🏠 Mass Displacement and Human Crisis

The violence has forced over one million people to flee their homes, according to the United Nations.

Many residents are now:

  • Sleeping outdoors
  • Living in overcrowded shelters
  • Cut off from basic supplies due to destroyed roads and bridges

Some villages in the south have become nearly unlivable due to constant attacks and damaged infrastructure.

However, not everyone is leaving. In the village of Rmeish, local priest Najib Al Amil said residents are determined to stay despite the danger.

🪖 Israel’s Long-Term Strategy

Israel has announced plans to control large parts of southern Lebanon up to the Litani River, about 30 km from its border. The goal is to create a “buffer zone” for security.

Israel Katz stated that:

  • Displaced Lebanese residents may not be allowed to return soon
  • Villages near the border could be destroyed
  • The strategy may follow models used in Gaza

This plan has been criticized internationally and seen by many as a violation of Lebanon’s sovereignty.

⚖️ Rising Death Toll and Tensions

So far, at least 1,268 people have been killed in Lebanon since the conflict began, according to official reports.

The Lebanese army has also pulled back from some southern positions after suffering losses, including a soldier killed in an airstrike.

🌍 Growing Concerns for the Future

Many experts warn that the situation could turn into a long-term conflict similar to past wars in the region.

Some believe:

  • Israel has strong air power and can cause large-scale destruction
  • Hezbollah remains powerful on the ground and could wage prolonged guerrilla warfare

This means the conflict may continue for a long time, leaving civilians caught in the middle.

🧭 Conclusion

The escalation of attacks beyond Hezbollah-controlled areas shows that the conflict is widening and becoming more dangerous.

For hundreds of thousands of displaced people, the future remains uncertain. Many fear that this war could reshape southern Lebanon for years to come — with no quick end in sight.
