The King and Queen’s upcoming state visit to the United States is being framed as an effort to renew and strengthen ties between the two longstanding allies, according to the UK’s ambassador.
Sir Christian Turner said the visit by King Charles III and Queen Camilla would focus on “renewing and revitalising” the unique relationship between the United Kingdom and the United States.
The four-day trip will begin in Washington DC, where the royal couple will be welcomed at the White House by Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump.
The visit comes at a sensitive time, with political tensions between the two countries and added security concerns following a recent shooting incident in Washington. Despite this, officials from both sides agreed the trip should proceed, with only minor adjustments to ensure safety.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer has already spoken with President Trump, reaffirming the importance of the visit. The King and Queen also privately expressed their sympathies to the Trump family following the recent incident.
The visit is expected to include ceremonial engagements in Washington, as well as events in New York and Virginia. One symbolic moment will be a visit to the 9/11 Memorial, highlighting shared history and solidarity between the two nations.
According to the ambassador, the visit aims to showcase the deep-rooted connections between the UK and US, including shared values, military cooperation, economic ties, and cultural links. He emphasised that the partnership extends beyond political leadership and remains important for both countries’ security and prosperity.
However, the visit also comes amid disagreements between the two governments. President Trump has recently criticised the UK over its stance on the Iran conflict, creating strain in the relationship. Diplomats now appear to avoid using the phrase “special relationship,” reflecting the current complexities.
A key moment during the visit will be the King’s address to the US Congress, where he is expected to carefully balance diplomatic messaging while maintaining a positive tone. President Trump is also set to host a state dinner and deliver remarks during the visit.
While some UK politicians, including Ed Davey, have criticised the visit and called for its cancellation, officials insist it is an important opportunity to rebuild ties.
The UK government hopes that the strong personal regard expressed by President Trump for the monarchy will help improve broader political relations between the two countries.
