Pakistan and China signed three Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) on Monday aimed at expanding cooperation in water desalination, agricultural technology, and the tea industry, strengthening bilateral economic and technical ties between the two countries.
The agreements were signed during President Asif Ali Zardari’s ongoing week-long official visit to China, which continues until May 1. The signing ceremony was witnessed by the President, highlighting the importance of the initiatives in Pakistan-China development cooperation.
The first MoU focuses on a seawater desalination project in Karachi, intended to improve the city’s water supply situation. The agreement was signed between the Sindh Local Government Department and Lucion Environmental Technology Group. The project is expected to help address long-standing water shortages in Pakistan’s largest city.
The second agreement covers agricultural technology cooperation between Sindh authorities and Long Ping Hi-tech Information Company. The initiative aims to introduce advanced farming techniques and improve agricultural productivity through modern technology transfer.
The third MoU involves collaboration in the tea sector, bringing together Meskay & Femtee Trading Company of Pakistan with Hunan Tea Group and Jiaolong International Technology (Hainan). The partnership seeks to enhance tea production, trade, and industry development while strengthening economic and cultural ties between the two countries.
Several senior officials, including Pakistan’s Ambassador to China Khalil Hashmi, participated in the ceremony, alongside provincial and federal representatives.
Officials said the agreements reflect a growing focus on practical, sector-based cooperation under the broader Pakistan-China economic partnership framework, particularly in areas linked to infrastructure, food security, and trade development.
