LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board has imposed a fine of Rs20 million on fast bowler Naseem Shah for breaching multiple clauses of his central contract following a controversial social media post.
The disciplinary action comes after the player was issued a show-cause notice last week for violating contractual obligations, media policy, and regulatory guidelines.
Controversial Social Media Post
The issue arose after a post from Naseem’s account appeared to criticize Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, who attended the opening match of the Pakistan Super League at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium.
The comment questioned the level of protocol extended during the event, drawing significant attention online.
The post was later deleted and replaced with a statement claiming that the account had been hacked, though the explanation did not prevent disciplinary proceedings.
Disciplinary Proceedings and Fine
According to the PCB, a three-member disciplinary committee reviewed Naseem’s response and conducted a personal hearing before issuing its decision.
While the cricketer submitted an unconditional apology, the board concluded that he had violated several clauses of his contract and imposed a Rs20 million fine.
The PCB also stated that Naseem’s social media adviser had been terminated and would be blacklisted from working with any players under its jurisdiction.
Player Response
In a statement posted on social media, Naseem clarified that the controversial content had been shared by his management team and did not reflect his personal views.
He accepted responsibility for his platform and apologized for the incident, stating that measures had been taken to prevent a recurrence.
Policy and Wider Debate
The PCB reiterated its commitment to maintaining professional standards, emphasizing that its code of conduct prohibits public criticism of the board, its officials, or associated stakeholders.
The incident has also sparked broader debate, with some voices questioning whether the board’s action represents an overreach that could impact freedom of expression for athletes.
Context
The controversy comes at a time when Pakistan Super League matches are being held under restricted conditions due to austerity measures linked to the ongoing energy crisis.
Outlook
The case highlights the growing challenges sports bodies face in regulating player conduct in the age of social media.
As digital platforms continue to blur personal and professional boundaries, similar cases may shape future policies governing athlete expression and accountability.
