Govt raises petrol by Rs6.51, diesel by Rs19.39; new prices effective May 1
The government has increased the price of petrol by Rs6.51 per litre and high-speed diesel (HSD) by Rs19.39 per litre, according to a notification issued by the Petroleum Division on Thursday.
Following the hike, petrol will now be priced at Rs399.86 per litre, while HSD will cost Rs399.58 per litre. The revised rates will come into effect from May 1.
Petrol is widely used in private vehicles, motorcycles, and rickshaws, making it a key expense for middle- and lower-income households. High-speed diesel, on the other hand, is primarily used in heavy transport, agriculture, and power generation, meaning the increase is likely to have a broader impact on inflation and the cost of goods.
The price adjustment comes amid ongoing economic coordination with the International Monetary Fund. Sources indicate that Pakistan has assured the IMF it is on track to meet its petroleum levy target, while maintaining its primary budget balance.
Officials also dismissed rumours of a nationwide fuel shortage or petrol pump closures. The Petroleum Division stated that supplies remain stable and sufficient across the country, urging the public not to believe unverified claims circulating on social media.
The recent increase also coincides with global market uncertainty, particularly concerns over oil supply disruptions linked to tensions in the Middle East.
Industry representatives, including petrol pump owners, have also denied reports of any planned strike, confirming that fuel stations will continue normal operations.
The latest hike is expected to increase transportation costs and contribute to rising prices of essential goods, adding further pressure on consumers already dealing with inflation.
