Pope Leo Says He Has ‘No Fear’ of Trump After Sharp Criticism Over Iran War Stance

Vatican City — Pope Leo has said he has “no fear” of Donald Trump after the US leader launched a sharp and unusual public attack on the pontiff over his stance on the Iran conflict.

Speaking to reporters aboard a flight to Algeria, the Pope stressed that his mission is rooted in promoting peace, not engaging in political disputes.

“I have no fear of the Trump administration, or speaking out loudly of the message of the gospel,” he said. “I don’t want to get into a debate with Trump.”

War of Words Over Iran Conflict

The exchange comes amid escalating tensions over the Iran war, where Pope Leo has been a vocal critic of military escalation.

He previously condemned Trump’s warning that “a whole civilisation will die” if Iran did not comply, calling such rhetoric “truly unacceptable” and urging leaders to pursue diplomacy instead.

Trump, in response, took to Truth Social, accusing the Pope of being “weak on crime and terrible for foreign policy,” later telling reporters he was “not a big fan” of the pontiff.

Rare Public Clash

Direct confrontations between a Pope and a sitting US president are rare. The Catholic Church traditionally avoids engaging in overt political disputes, making this exchange particularly notable.

Despite the criticism, Pope Leo maintained a measured tone, emphasizing the humanitarian cost of ongoing conflicts.

“Too many people are suffering in the world today. Too many innocent people are being killed,” he said. “Someone has to stand up and say there’s a better way.”

Global and Domestic Reactions

Trump’s remarks have drawn criticism from Catholic scholars and observers worldwide. Historian Massimo Faggioli noted that such direct public criticism of a pope is highly unusual, even in historical context.

The issue carries particular weight in the United States, where more than 70 million Catholics make up roughly one-fifth of the population — including Vice President JD Vance.

Broader Policy Differences

Beyond the Iran conflict, Pope Leo has also criticized Trump’s hardline immigration policies, questioning whether such approaches align with pro-life values.

The pontiff is widely seen as continuing the humanitarian legacy of Pope Francis, who also had public disagreements with Trump during his presidency.

A Message of Peace

As Pope Leo continues his 11-day Africa tour, his message remains focused on diplomacy, de-escalation, and humanitarian values.

While political tensions between Washington and the Vatican may intensify, the Pope made it clear he intends to stay above political confrontation — and continue advocating for peace on the global stage.
