Suspect sprinted past security, reached stairs leading to Correspondents’ Dinner ballroom

The suspect at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner reportedly sprinted through a security checkpoint and reached the staircase leading directly to the ballroom where top U.S. officials were gathered.

According to eyewitness accounts and security analysis, the man—identified by officials as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen—ran about 60 feet after passing through an initial magnetometer screening at the Washington Hilton hotel.

Witnesses said he moved quickly and appeared focused, not speaking as he ran toward the restricted area. There were reports that no additional full security checkpoint was present between the screening area and the staircase leading up to the ballroom.

The suspect was stopped near the top of the stairs before reaching the ballroom entrance. Photographs from the scene show him being restrained by security personnel on the floor near the staircase.

Officials said he was carrying multiple weapons, including a shotgun, a handgun, and knives. Authorities confirmed he was not shot during the incident, though a Secret Service officer was injured.

Guests inside the venue described sudden panic after the breach, with some hearing gunfire and others taking shelter inside nearby rooms until the situation was controlled.

Security forces quickly secured the area and evacuated guests after the suspect was detained. An investigation is now underway to determine how he was able to move so far into a high-security event despite screening procedures.
