UK to Deploy More Troops and Air Defence Systems to Middle East

LONDON: The United Kingdom has announced the deployment of additional troops and air defence systems to the Middle East, raising its total military presence in the region to around 1,000 personnel.

Defence Secretary John Healey said the move is aimed at strengthening defensive capabilities against possible Iranian attacks. The additional forces will be deployed to Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Kuwait, while the use of Typhoon fighter jets in Qatar will be extended.

Speaking during a visit to Gulf countries, Healey said, “Britain’s best will help you defend your skies,” adding that UK forces are playing a key role in regional security.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the UK would not be drawn into the war but would continue to protect its interests and support allies in the region.

The deployment includes advanced systems such as the Sky Sabre air defence missile system, which will be sent to Saudi Arabia along with operational teams. The system is designed to intercept aircraft and missiles and will be integrated into regional defence networks.

In Bahrain, the UK has already deployed a Lightweight Multirole Missile system, while a ground-based air defence system known as Rapid Sentry has been delivered to Kuwait.

The decision comes amid rising tensions in the region, with officials warning that the conflict could continue for several more weeks. Gulf nations have welcomed the UK’s support, calling it a key part of their defence.

Recent concerns have also grown after attacks on civilian infrastructure, including damage to a power and desalination plant in Kuwait, highlighting the risk to essential services in the region.
