Viktor Orbán Ousted After 16 Years as Hungary Delivers Historic Election Shock

In a landmark political shift, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has conceded defeat in national elections, bringing an end to his 16-year rule over Hungary.

Orbán acknowledged the loss on Sunday, calling the result “painful” but “clear,” and congratulated opposition leader Péter Magyar, whose center-right Tisza party secured a sweeping victory.

According to election officials, Magyar’s party is set to win a two-thirds parliamentary majority — a powerful mandate that could allow the new leadership to reverse many of the controversial policies implemented during Orbán’s tenure.

Magyar campaigned on promises to tackle corruption and address key domestic challenges, including Hungary’s struggling economy and healthcare system. Celebrating the victory, he told supporters that together they had “liberated Hungary.”

Orbán, a prominent nationalist leader and ally of Donald Trump, had remained a divisive figure in European politics, often clashing with the European Union over democratic standards and governance issues.

His defeat is expected to be welcomed by European leaders, many of whom had criticized his policies and leadership style. However, it may be seen as a setback for Trump and other right-wing political allies who had supported Orbán during the campaign.

During the election, Orbán sought to rally support by warning voters that Hungary risked being drawn into the ongoing Ukraine war. In contrast, Magyar focused on internal reforms and economic recovery.

The election marks a turning point for Hungary, signaling a potential shift in both domestic policy and its relationship with European partners after more than a decade of Orbán’s leadership.
